HOW TO POWER 6 VOLT DEVICES AT HOME
REGULATED 6 VOLT POWER SUPPLY
FRS RADIO POWER SUPPLY - WALKIE TALKIE POWER SUPPLY
(how to get rid of the HUM during transmit on FRS Radios)
Hello. If you have made it here you are probably trying to figure out how to power a 6, 7 or 9 volt device at home. i.e. FRS RADIOS. Not just that. But you are seeking "Regulated Power. Oh yes. You are aware that a regulated dc adjustable power supply is very expensive. You also know that the reason you need six volts of regulated power is because you may be using a device that transmits. You are using a walkie talkie, an frs radio or perhaps a business band radio at home. You want full time regulated power. You may be aware that you can reduce the voltage on your exsisting 12 volt supply by building a circuit with a transistor and a few components, but you want a simple quick fix. Most importantly, there will be a hum in your transmit audio on your FRS radio if you transmit with a typical 6 volt wall adapter. You are hear to get rid of the hum.
First We will start with a 12 volt supply. Here you can kill two birds with one stone. If you already have a Regulated 12 volt supply you are good. If you don't have one, you might as well get one. There will be many other uses for it in your future. And for this project, the power supply with the cig lighter plug alread in it is perfect. here is one I see on the net for under $40.
Now to get that power supply down to six volts plug in a "DC to DC Converter". These converters are used in cars to allow you to plug one end into the ciggerette lighter and then plug in your 1.5-9V accessories into it.Notice how the product below has 2000 milliamps. It has 2 AMPS. Meaning some "300-500mAh"(half an amp) model of this same style of converter will not work for a 5 watt radio for example. Two full amps (2000ma) should be ample current for most deices. A local automotive store should have a car ciggerette lighter plug you can wire to your 12 volt regulated supply if you already have a regulated 12 supply.
Now you have cleanly regulated 6 volts to power your device at home cleanly. Clean regulated power is very important with any radio that broadcasts. If you don't get enough current or your power is not properly regulated it makes your overall signal dirty. This is a big no no at these frequencies. You wouldn't want to cause interference to other services because the wal wart power supply you were using was causing your radio to grind out some horrible signals outside of the FRS radio range. The best part being getting rid of that annoying hum.
