DiY Security Camera for Cheap!
Did you know you can set up a security camera system in your home or garage with a few simple things?
Most people have what it takes to accomplish this right in their home. All you need is a webcam and perhaps a USB extension cord. Yes even a cheap dollar store webcam will work for this easy project. Most people might be thinking at this point, "what does having a webcam have to do with security cams?". Well that's an easy answer. If you have a webcam and the ability to point it out your window you have a security cam. All you need is the software. This gets more interesting. Webcam security software records what happens on your webcam the same as a store security camera. This allows you the come back later and "review the tape" as they say.
Interested? It gets better. With the right webcam security software you can have "motion detection". Meaning, your webcam does not start recording untul there is movement. With this you can see all movement in that area in a period of many hours in just a few short minutes. Motion activated means you wont be sitting there all day going over your past recorded security data. There is even a function to loop. Meaning only record a set amount of timeframe. For example it only records what has happened in the last 48 hours. Amazing how even the motion detection feature of Security Camera software will work with a $10 camera in your window,
Maybe you want multiple cameras. Perhaps you are wanting to set up multiple views with multiple cameras. No problem. Now they have some pretty nice wireless security cameras on the market. They are certainly coming down in price. You put the cameras outside with batteries in them and then it transmits the video back to your pc where you view on multiple picture in picture screens. Pretty slick operation. For the do it yourseler one can easilly just plug in multiple cheap webcams and USB extension cords. Could be as easy as dusting off that old computer, plugging in a couple cheap webcams and sticking them in some windows. Be creative. perhaps the project you are doing does not warrant the price of a nice wireless secirity system.

You could set up your webcams on a streaming video stream and watch your secured area on your laptop. Most web cam security software will also involve sound. hey at least with the cheap DiYbum method you don't have to change the batteries on the wireless camera you have mounted on the corner of each house. |
