DiY Motorcycle Alarm
DiY Outdoor Motor Cycle Motion Detector Alarm
This is NOT an alarm that mounts on your bike. This is a DiY outdoor security alarm for people that park their motorcycle outside of their house or apartment.
I remember not having a garage. I remember having to park my rz350 outside of the door of my apartment. I knew that bike locks were of little or no use because if someone wants the bike they will get it. There is no questioning that. And chances are if they steal your bike with a lock, there will be 3 guys to put it in a van. They will get it no matter what clever measures you come up with to secure it. It's enough to make one very paranoid.
I have the solution for this problem. Well a cheap DiY solution. This is for people that don't exactly want to put an alarm on their bike. Alarms are not very practical on most bikes. This project may cost you less than $20.
Introducing the DiYbum outdoor motorcycle alarm.
Materials Needed-
Screw In Motion Sensor Switch($???)
Bulb Socket to 110v Adapter ($3 hardware store)
AC Adapter/ 4-12 volts DC (free?)
Piezo Buzzer ($4.50 Radio Shack Catalog #: 273-060)
DIRECTIONS
TURN OFF POWER TO LIGHT SOCKET OUTSIDE
This is pretty easy. Park your bike by the porch or wherever there is a light socket.
1- Screw Motion Sensor Unit into light socket.
2- Screw Bulb Socket Adapter into bottom of motion sensor.
3- Strip wires on your ac adapter and hook them to the piezo buzzer. Test buzzer by plugging in the power pack somewhere inside. Be ready. It will be loud and perhaps startle you when you plug it in. Remember the buzzer handles like 4-20 volts. The powerpack you use should say input-120V output 6VDC for example. 4-12DC should work. 6,7 volts may be louder than 4 volts DC. Once you verify your buzzer is working, plug the powerpack into the Bulb Socket Adapter plugged in below the motion sensor. Buzzer goes off when motion detector is tripped. You also have the ability to screw a flood light into the bottom.
TIPs- The buzzer goes inside the house. Use a long piece of wire on the powerpack and run the buzzer inside the house. Run the wire so it is hidden and then let the wire in at a door or window so the buzzer can be in the house. Cheap speaker wire will work fine. You might be advised to put electrical tape around the powerpack and adaptor so the power adapter does not come unplugged.
4- Now mount the motion sensor somewhere near the light where it will be facing all of the areas surrounding the motorcycle.
Here is how it works. Make sure power is always on to the light socket, porch light or whatever it is screwed in to. What is happening here is we have a simple porch light motion detector. Instead of turning on a light outside when people get close to your bike, it sets off the alarm in your house. Motion lights do not stop thieves. Lights will help thieves to see better allowing them to steal your bike more easilly. With this method, if anyone gets anywhere near your bike you will know about it. The motion sensor will have a handy adjustment. You can set it so the alarm does not go off untul they get within 5 feet of the bike. or you can set the sensor so the alarm goes off the moment they step foot in your yard.
WARNING- This is a good way to catch someone trying to steal your bike. Then what are you going to do? Open the door while you catch them and there may be a lookout for the theif with a weapon. You may have a gun yourself and kill some stupid kid making a bad decision. The best advice would be to call 911 if you catch them and peek out the blinds keeping the cops updated to their progress. You don't want to get yourself in more legal trouble than your bike is worth. Sure it would be nice to walk outside and give them a good kicking but things never seem to go as planned. Chances are, that buzzer is so loud the thief will hear it from outside the house the moment he steps foot near your bike.
Pretty Good Motorcycle Alarm for just a few bucks.
