FREE HIGH SPEED INTERNET ACCESS
DiY EASY FREE HIGH SPEED INTERNET ACCESS
Wireless Internet: Also called "Internet Cafe". You know, those people that get free internet on their laptop everywhere they go. You can get it at your house on your home computer(s). Fully Legal.
To Get It, you need 2 things:
A Wireless Network Card and Antenna
Wireless Network Cards come in Two Types, USB or PCI. A PCI Wireless Network Card Plugs inside a Desktop Computer giving you a jack on the back of the computer to plug in an antenna. A USB wireless device plugs into one of your USB ports on your computer. USB wireless devices have the antenna built into the device The PCI card with a "Cantenna" is the best choice to get distant signals from miles away. No software install needed. Plug them in and start surfing the web. Like a laptop at an internet cafe, a little monitor icon will appear on your windows taskbar by the clock that reads "Wireless Connected to The Internet...". It's all already built into windows and automatically comes online when any wireless devices are installed. No settings or configuration needed.
And don't think you won't be lucky enough to receive free wireless internet. I have seen many free connections in small towns with populations numbering just a couple hundred people. With my cantenna indoors in the window, I am receiving free high speed as far as 2 miles away with up to 5 connection choices. People are doing this all over the planet. People in remote rural farm areas are getting extension cables and putting their antennas outdoors receiving internet up to 10 miles away or more. The world record is near 50 miles at legal power. The more expensive PCI wireless network cards tend to receive better than the ones half the price (fact).
USB DEVICE ANTENNA TWEAKS
No doubt the best setup is an expensive PCI network card, quality cable and a Cantenna. BUT, people are extending the range of these little USB devices in various ways that are quite amazing. Before I went Cantenna I experimented with some of the various usb devices, as well as other people I know with free internet. Examples Below.
1: Get an old satellite dish. You know that round thing on the end of the arm in front of the sat dish that collects the signal? Thats called an LNB. It is in the "focal point" of the dish. Waves strike the dish and bounce back up concentrated(focused) into that LNB. It should be around 41cm above the dish. Remove the LNB but leave the arm. Now put your usb device exactly where that LNB was in front of the dish. If your usb device has a little stubby antenna, don't point the antenna into the dish like a sword. Put the little antenna straight up and down paralell to the dish. Antennas receive from the side and not the point. Put the side of the device with the antenna on it closest to the dish. The middle of the antenna should be in the focal point, 41centimeters above the deep center of the dish. If using one of those stubby USB ciggerette lighter sized USB network device don't point it in the dish like a sword. It must also be in the focal point 41cm above the dish, parallel to the dish. (some people have connected like 5-7 miles with this setup. My testing proves this setup was good but not as good as PCI/Cantenna reception.
2: Be creative. Some people put their little usb device in front of a metal mixing bowl in the same configuration as described in tweak #1. They always get better results than with just the device alone. If you have one of those ciggerette pack shaped usb units with the stubby antenna, put it in front of a pie tin about 4-7 inches, move it around and watch the signal go up. Some people report very good results using those round chinese cooking strainers. Anything round with a dish to it will work.
3: Get a big soup or bean can. Leave one end of the can open and the other end unopened. Put a hole in the side of the can 2 inches above the unopened end of the can. Stick the little stubby antenna attached to your ciggerette pack size USB unit in that hole. Put some tape on the USB unit to hold it to the side of the can. Make sure it's taped to the side of the can so the antenna inside the can is even and paralell with the unopened end of the can. Antenna inside can 2 inches above unopend end of can in the "focal point". It will act like a cantenna but won't work as good. Still way better than just the stock device. You can also go one step further with this mod by doing the same as tweak #1, but point your usb can into the focal point of the Sat dish. Put the open end of the can facing into the focal point of the dish.
4: Get a Cantenna. The experimentation was fun with all the USB devices, but nothing draws the signals in like a good PCI network card, good cable and a Cantenna. If you think you are planning on using long USB extension cables you better think again. My testing shows after about 15 feet the signal drops off somewhat. Better quality USB cable might help. Also, don't think you are going to just run some old cable tv or cb coax out to the old cantenna. These antennas use expensive low loss cable and connectors. You lose some serious gain on the antenna with long cable runs even with the high dollar low loss cable. Like me, you may find you don't need extra cable. Just pointing the Cantenna out the window facing directly into houses and trees picks up free internet from half mile away.
